L is for Learner

I’m going to stick a big red L on my computer (for “Learner”, not for “Loser”). Whenever we’re driving and I get frustrated because we’re behind a slow learner, my wife always says: “You also had to start somewhere”. She’s right. So what brought this on?

Well, I just learnt something. Something extremely simple, yet profoundly useful. I always struggled with copious amount of data in Unix shells. I resorted to piping everything through more, and rather than use the console, using a remote terminal emulator program with a scrollbar. The solution? Shift+PgUp. It allows you to scroll up (or page up) through screens of output in a shell. (As you would expect, Shift+PgDn allows you to page back down).

Don’t laugh. You also had to start somewhere.
